Director, Engineering

We are now looking for a talented individual to lead our software engineering function. We need someone who is technically strong, energetic, highly collaborative, and passionate about our products and customers.

This is an opportunity to lead a team of developers working on applications built with languages such as Javascript, Django, Node.js, PHP, React.js, Python, and REST deployed on Heroku. We value transparent communication and feedback, code reviews, and making learning fun.


  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Engineering team, and ensure that your teams have clear priorities and adequate resources.
  • Partner with Product Managers to align on product objectives, priorities, tradeoffs, and risk.
  • Manage existing technical contract relationships, and select external contractors and contract firms as needed.
  • Lead the development of a software platform for Singularity that powers current and future web, mobile, and B2B applications.
  • Drive delivery and quality assurance of products by collaborating with cross-functional teams, product owners, and engineers.
  • Participate in data architecture discussions and planning.
  • Serve as Scrum Master for engineering teams.
  • Occasionally contribute to development tasks such as coding and feature verifications to assist teams with release commitments and keep your technical acumen sharp.
  • Create a motivational environment that enables high performance.
  • Provide technical guidance, career development, and mentoring to team members.
  • Delegate with skill, and empower engineers to provide leadership to projects and work streams where appropriate.
  • Hire a smart, diverse pool of talented engineers.

Our Requirements (you must have):

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, or equivalent related education/experience.
  • 10+ years of software development experience, with five or more years leading software development project teams.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Previously demonstrated customer service-oriented work experience.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies, and experience serving as a Scrum Master.

About You (we’d like it if you have):

  • Experience managing external or contracted software development teams.
  • A distinguished track record on executing technically demanding projects.
  • Deep knowledge of professional software engineering best practices including coding standards, code reviews, SCM, CI, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to be nimble, proactive, and comfortable working with minimal specifications.
  • Experience with short release cycles, the full software lifecycle, and delivering a product for public use.
