Front-End Software Engineer

The Position:

The Front-End Software Engineer builds and enhances user interfaces for Singularity University’s (SU’s) information systems, mobile applications, websites, and technology-driven products which support our customers, community, faculty, staff, and partners.  S/he designs, develops, and maintains software and collaborates with a wide variety of individuals across the company (Marketing, Product, Technical Operations, and business leaders).

The role demands the ability to achieve as an individual contributor AND as a member of a high performing team.

Some of the Position’s Responsibilities:

  • Improve the user experience by translating designs and style guides into functional user interfaces and responsive performance applications, ensuring compatibility and performance.
  • Produce the visible and interactive features of the company’s websites by establishing coding standards, creating high-performance production applications that are fast and easy-to-use.
  • Lead Agile development process sprints for assigned projects.
  • Anticipate, identify, and mitigate performance and reliability bottlenecks.
  • Advocate for optimization and the implementation of new ideas and changes to existing software and websites.
  • Protect the security of customer and internal data.
  • Evolve and develop product metrics and statistical analysis to help ensure that digital products and services achieve their objectives for growth, engagement, and utility.
  • Improve the Engineering team practices through identifying  software upgrade paths and timing considerations, recommending process and policy enhancements, and creating well reasoned and supported business cases for “build or buy.”
  • Draw upon your technology and software development expertise to develop a perspective and constantly improve on ways to optimize the company’s technology infrastructure, software, and approaches to software development.

Our Requirements (you must have):

  • At least two years of professional experience in an engineering role focused on front-end development ( software design, development, and algorithm related solutions).
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience using all of the following: Javascript, HTML5, and CSS3.
  • A demonstrable understanding of JavaScript libraries & frameworks such as jQuery, Angular, and/or React, with command of asynchronous request handling and an ability to leverage, and create, shared libraries designed for abstraction and reuse.

About You (we’d like it if you…):

  • Are a skilled developer of cloud-based application services, web and/or mobile analytics in support of an e-commerce entity, web, and mobile applications, middleware and/or back-end applications Python.
  • Have a strong understanding of basic data structures and algorithms such as linked lists, queues, stacks and hash sets.
  • Are scary-good at working with web and mobile analytics tagging, attribution, and event tracking using analytics services such as Google Analytics.
  • Are top-notch at developing with Python frameworks such as Flask (Django highly preferred).
  • Are biased toward action and are a great collaborator. You never stop pushing towards clarity and delivery.
  • You never hesitate to roll up your sleeves and tackle something hands-on, you persevere when others fall away.
  • You have developed moderately complex SQL queries and designed basic relational database schemas (Postgres or MySQL).
  • You have previous experience using revision control, configuring environments, planning software releases, packaging software for deployment and creating software builds.
  • You have knowledge and understanding of REST and Internet APIs.
